That’s correct, a group of Welshmen have created a hydrogen fuel cell minibus that will go on sale for only $190,000. Researchers at the University of Glamorgan in Wales developed the fuel cell minibus known as the Hydrogen Bus and put it on display at the Tenth Grove Fuel Cell Symposium in October 2007.

The Hydrogen Bus is capable of carrying 16 passengers, primarily students and faculty around the University. This H2 minibus is actually a tribrid vehicle powered by a fuel cell, ultracapacitor and battery pack. The vehicle can get up and go up to 55 mph with a range of 150 miles before refueling.

Dragon Coachworks designed the body for the minibus and plans to commercialize the vehicle for sale in Europe and the U. S. The $190,000 price tag is far below the cost often quoted for other fuel cell vehicles, which can be in excess of $1 million each. Because of newer technology and mass production methods, however, the price keeps dropping on such fuel cell vehicles.

So, get on the hydrogen bus, Gus. Don’t need to discuss much. Just drop off the key, Lee and set yourself free to experience new, exciting, low cost, zero emissions automotive technology.

The Suzuki Pixy is another pod people favorite from the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. Officially called the Suzuki Pixy + SSC (Suzuki Shared Coach), these futuristic vehicles could have come straight out of a SciFi thriller.

Two of these little Segways-on-steroids can be driven into the Suzuki Shared Coach, which can then be driven to a new location. The first Suzuki Pixy to enter the SSC has control of the vehicle until stopped and both personal transportation vehicles disembark the mother ship.

The Suzuki Pixy is another foray into hydrogen technology. At the same show, the vehicle maker rolled out the Suzuki Crosscage fuel cell motorcycle, also running on hydrogen.

The Suzuki Pixy uses both solar energy and hydrogen to power the wheels of the vehicle. One could expect in the future to find a pair of Suzuki Pixys at an airport or some other large indoor facility, such as a giant mall.

With all of the personal transportation concept devices being rolled out recently such as the Suzuki Pixy and Toyota i-Real, it would be interesting to see a little bumper car competition between the different models.

Don’t look for these Back to the Future vehicles anytime soon, however, except, perhaps as part of one of next summer’s blockbuster films. The Suzuki Pixy may not be whistling Dixie, but it does give us a glimpse as to where we are headed in the next few years.

The Suzuki Crosscage motorcycle is powered by hydrogen fuel cell and joins forces between the Japanese motorbike manufacturer and Intelligent Energy from the United Kingdom. The Suzuki Crosscage is a cross between a high-performance motorcycle and a tofu-eating hydrogen vehicle.

Intelligent Energy, who for the past couple of years has been working on the less sexy ENV fuel cell motorcycle, developed the fuel cell system for the Suzuki Crosscage and just debuted their stunning bike at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.

Neither company has yet issued a press release or any technical details about the hydrogen motorcycle. The few details we know about the Suzuki Crosscage is that it uses a unique cross-cage frame, the electric motor is mounted inline inside the rear wheel, the speedometer is limited to 100 mph and it uses monoshocks, front and rear.

When more news gets out, however, you can be assured that the Suzuki Crosscage will be all the rage and you’ll be hearing a lot more about this zero emissions bike in the very near future.
